PREMIUM DRIP

ANALOG MIXED MEDIA BY

GRACE BALEY

KIM HAMBURG

MAY 18 - JULY 12, 2023

We are proud to present PREMIUM DRIP - analog mixed media art by Grace Baley & Kim Hamburg.

This two-woman show showcased glass mosaic artworks by Grace Baley alongside mixed media collages by Kim Hamburg. While their styles and mediums are distinct, both artists share a tireless, infectious love for their respective crafts, which they pass along in privately-run workshops and video tutorials. Whether wielding an exquisite collection of colorful broken glass, or the world's largest collection of scissors - both women have proven many times that they are not afraid to bleed for their art.

There will be glue, glass, paper, scissors, paint, cement & blood.

NYC based artist GRACE BALEY has been honing her skills in glass mosaics since 1998. Originally inspired by the mosaic art found underground in subway stations, Grace experimented with shapes and patterns to practice and perfect her glass cutting techniques and assemblage. Her evolution into representational work has allowed her to create pieces that are deeply detailed and realistic, including portraiture and familiar imagery. Grace’s passion for color and instinct for harmonious combinations further adds to the appeal of her art.

Grace has had multiple solo shows throughout New York, such as Basin Gallery and Studios, Superfine, Blue Sky (Sag Harbor), Elements (Hudson) and Dewey’s Candy. She has also participated in group shows with The 60 Collective 3, Van Der PLAS Gallery, New York Historical Society and currently at POP International Gallery on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. She has collectors from all around the world and often collaborates with architects and interior designers in creating site-specific work and custom installations. Small works can be found in retail shops throughout the city.

Grace received her BFA from NYU and subsequently earned an MA in Childhood Education. She combines her love of teaching and mosaic making through the workshops she regularly offers around the city. She resides in Brooklyn with her two daughters and their rescue dogs from Puerto Rico, Jade and Benny.

The mixed media art of Kim Hamburg repurposes papers of the past with a witty modern perspective that heralds the future of collage. Her artwork is striking at first glance - colorful and decorative, a vaguely familiar mash-up of Victorian scrap-booking, Hannah Hoch and Raushenberg that gradually reveals the artist’s undeniably authentic voice. Kim uses layered images to comment on our hidden selves and subconscious thoughts. Looking closely at her maximalist style, one finds deeper meanings, and often a wry, insightful commentary on female oppression or empowerment.

Kim threw herself into collage as a way of coping with the Covid-19 pandemic and she's been on a prolific and experimental roll ever since. Kim produces at least one collage every day, guided by emotion and intuition, resulting in art that resonates universally. She blew up within months of her Instagram debut, and now posts daily to nearly 35K followers.

Kim received commendations at the 2022 Contemporary Collage Makers Awards. She recently taught a class at the Collage Makers Summit which made her lessons available online. Last year, she began posting technique videos on IG to share her self-invented tricks, tools and thrifty tips. Kim is an avid hunter of vintage and found papers, keeps an impressive collection of scissors and draws constant creative inspiration from her adult daughters.
